Real Estate - Architectural Photography project
View West Photography was commissioned to shoot the beautiful Chesters House as part of a wider real estate architectural photography project.
We were thrilled to be working on such a luxury property. We worked on both interior photography and exterior photography.
Chesters House is an 18th-century British country mansion adjacent to Hadrian's Wall and the Roman fort of Cilurnum at Humshaugh, Northumberland, England. It is a Grade II* listed building.
As for any architectural photographer or hotel photographer, the exterior photograph of a building is the real money shot, a lot of thought and planning should be considered for this photograph.
An important thing to consider is firstly the composition of the shot, a bit of time taken to walk around the property is very valuable, become familiar with the subject.
The next thing is the lighting of the building for the photography, take a compass and track where the sun will be at certain times of the day. It is personal preference but I lean towards front side lighting on a building, this will generally highlight any nice detail in architectural photography.
For the exterior shot, I decided that a one point perspective composition would show off this building to its best.
One point perspective can be a very powerful tool for architectural photography if used in the right way.
Adding an elevated angle, the symmetry of the house and gardens worked perfectly together, the soft sunlight from the West helped pick out the detail in the stonework.
Library shot
Generally for interior photography the key consideration is to select a feature of the room, a formal fireplace or a beautiful window then set about finding an angle that will show off as much of the interior which incorporates this feature as well as details of the room.
Drawing room shot
Sometimes with interior photography, you walk into a room and everything just works. This opulent drawing room had everything, the elegance, the natural light, the colour etc.
In this case I chose not to over think this, I added a small amount of fill in flash just to create a bit more balance to the ambient light for this luxury interior photograph.
Final thoughts
So there you have it, a few basic things to think about before any architectural photography, hotel photography or location photo shoot. Always consider those simple steps before you commence, this will give you a solid foundation for any advertising or commercial photography commission.
